We're Hiring - Community Safety Officer (CSO)

The City of Portage la Prairie invites qualified applicants to submit a resume for consideration for the full-time position of Community Safety Officer (CSO). Reporting to the Manager of Community Safety, the CSO is primarily responsible to assist in enhancing public safety in the community by being a visible presence to promote safety and security during regular foot patrols in various areas through the City of Portage la Prairie.  The CSO works cooperatively with the RCMP and other stakeholders utilizing a collaborative enforcement model, with a focus on education, prevention, intervention, and enforcement.

Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Canadian citizen or a permanent resident
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Holds a valid class 4 drivers license
  • Meet minimum physical, vision and hearing requirements
  • Successful passing of Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sectors Check and ability to maintain ongoing
  • Successful passing of Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks and ability to maintain ongoing
  • Certification in Standard First Aid including CPR
  • Ability to work shift work
  • Post-secondary education or experience in a related field is preferred
  • Ability to take due care and responsibility while working alone and unsupervised
  • Ability to travel for extended periods to attend required training programs. *The successful candidate will be hired conditionally and required to successfully complete a 4-week training program May 5th to May 31st in Brandon
  • Proficiency in Microsoft computer application

In addition to the minimum qualification, the ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on respectful communication and conflict resolution, excellent oral and written communication with a focus on customer service and public relations, demonstrates ability to maintain a professional manner and make sound decisions under stressful public conditions, demonstrated knowledge of issues facing hard to serve populations, including but not limited to: homelessness, addictions, crime prevention, and public safety, demonstrated understanding of the social roots of crime and knowledge of community resources.

The wage is $30.80 an hour.

This position offers a comprehensive benefit program and competitive salary. The selection committee intends to review applications as early as March 7th, 2025; however, applications may continue to be accepted until the right candidate is found.
