Garbage and Recycling

The City of Portage la Prairie operates a 5-day solid waste collection cycle. Collection schedules can be viewed on our Collection Schedules Page, picked up at City Hall, or obtained by contacting the Operations Department at (204) 239-8346.

Garbage collection is on the front street year round. It is advised that you put your solid waste cart out prior to 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. 

Tips for Successful Garbage Pickup

To ensure your cart is collected, please follow these guidelines:

• Place wheels of your cart against the curb without impeding roadway or bike lanes.
• Leave at least 1 metre (3 feet) of space around your cart.
• Keep carts away from obstacles such as vehicles, poles, and fences.
• Overflowing carts will not be collected. The lid of your cart must be closed completely.

Bulky Waste Collection

The City offers four FREE bulky waste collection pickups each year. The 2026 pick up dates are (April 20-24, July 13-17, September 21-25, and December 28-January 4). Please note any bulky items larger than 45 kilograms (100 pounds) will be required to be disposed of by the owner. Bulky items containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), such as freon, must have the substance removed by a certified tradesperson and be clearly tagged before collection.

Items Not Accepted for Curbside Pickup

Please do not place the following items at the curb: 

• Hazardous waste (e.g. paint, pesticides, adhesives, oxidising and corrosive liquids)
• Fluorescent Light Bulbs
• Compressed Gas (including propane tanks)
• Tires or auto parts
• Electronic waste (e-waste)
• Batteries 
• Construction waste
